The pandemic has accelerated changes in the book publishing industry that have resulted in a very different landscape than the one I entered when I published my first book five years ago. . We can’t casually stroll into our local book store these days, if our local book store is even in business any longer. Many more of us are listening to audiobooks or reading on e-readers. While few authors can afford to bypass the sales opportunities of Amazon and its audiobook division, Audible, there are viable alternatives that are more supportive of independent book stores, and independent authors.
A new platform for purchasing and listening to audiobooks is Authors Direct, a website that allows authors to sell audiobooks directly to listeners. With their dedicated app, listeners can purchase audiobooks directly from their favorite authors and build their own libraries. To download the app and learn more click here. Bookshop.org is an online bookstore with a mission to financially support local, independent bookstores. I share their belief that bookstores are essential to a healthy culture.Their primary business is in hard-copy books, but they have affiliates for e-books (Hummingbird) and audiobooks (libro.fm). If you want to find a specific local bookstore to support, find it on Bookshop’s map and your chosen store will receive the full profit from your order. Otherwise, your order will contribute to an earnings pool that will be evenly distributed among independent bookstores (even those that don’t use Bookshop).
